Summer travel season started and many of you are going to take a vacation or travel overseas for various reasons. In case you wonder whether or not you need to buy travel insurance, the answer is – it depends.
See, there 2 main categories of travel insurance:
  1. Trip cancelation insurance and
  2. Travel Medical Insurance

Let’s take a look at both:

Trip cancelation insurance is a -package plan that includes trip cancelation (in case you need to cancel your trip for valid reasons prior to departure, it will reimburse you the pre-paid non-refundable portion of your trip cost (this type of policy is usually about 5% of the total trip cost).
Some credit cards offer trip cancelation coverage and if your card covers it, you obviously don’t have to waist extra money on travel insurance.

Travel Medical Insurance primarily covers travel medical insurance while abroad and covers emergency medical treatment and care. There are many plans available and it is relatively cheap to get one of those plans rather than take a chance. Some domestic health insurance might offer some type of coverage abroad or offer short term riders that will cover your trip.

Check with you health insurance carrier if your company offers such coverage. Otherwise, you might consider getting a separate medical travel insurance plan.
